Belarus unveils more tidbits about European Games medals

28.05.2019

CEO of the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MEGOC) George Katulin spoke about the design and composition of the medals of the upcoming sports festival in an interview with the ONT TV channel on 26 May, BelTA has learned.

“The gold medal looks traditional as it is a classic circle. Everything else is the result of a huge collective effort. The design embodies the main idea of the European Games: making your dream come true or, figuratively speaking, finding your magical fern flower. I would like to draw the attention to the manufacturing technology and the materials used in the medals. For example, the gold medal is plated with 24K gold and coated with nano-diamonds to ensure durability and wear resistance. This is a really unique technology. The same solutions are used in silver and bronze medals. The medals are indeed worthy of such an important and landmark forum for Europe as the 2nd European Games,” George Katulin said.

Sports facilities have been fully readied for the event, the equipment has been installed. “We are currently working on temporary infrastructure and branding of all facilities, on ensuring comfortable transportation service. Of course, the most important thing is safety of athletes and fans,” George Katulin noted.

Journalists from different countries have submitted more than 1,000 applications for accreditation. The total number is expected to exceed 1,200. “Journalists from 44 European countries will be present at the sports arenas, and eight European countries will be airing diaries and highlights of the games. More than 120 countries will broadcast the games. The number of TV viewers will exceed 500 million,” George Katulin said.

The opening ceremony of the 2nd European Games will feature the latest virtual reality technologies. “The show will be interactive. Every visitor will be a participant of the show. With the help of our IT technologies everyone will be able to download a special app to expand the participation effect,” the MEGOC CEO said.

The 2nd European Games will take place in Minsk on 21-30 June. More than 4,000 athletes from 50 countries will compete for 200 sets of medals in 15 sports.
