Work in progress to sell Belarusian electric buses to Europe

Belkommunmash is busy making pre-production models of electric buses in order to sell the products to the European market in late 2019 – early 2020, BelTA learned from Aleksandr Klakevich, Acting Head of the Foreign Economic Activities Office of OAO Managing Company of the Holding Company Belkommunmash.

The executive said: “We gradually build up our export potential. Electric buses have already been sold to Azerbaijan. There are good chances of exporting our products to Georgia. We are now making two pre-production models of electric buses in line with European standards, this is why either at the end of this year or at the beginning of the next year we are going to penetrate European markets.” So far the company has sold about 90 vehicles in Belarus and four electric bus assembly kits to Azerbaijan.

Aleksandr Klakevich also spoke about efforts to build up trolleybus production. “There is a great deal of trolleybus systems. There is no sense in destroying them. In any case we should keep them in a working order. For instance, about 11,000 trolleybuses are exported to Russia. On the whole, the market is rather large. There is demand. Our job is to satisfy it,” he noted. According to the Belkommunmash representative, making a new trolleybus model is not the idea for now. Plans have been made to restyle Mark 321, which is used in Minsk and has already become a classic. Cutting-edge technologies are employed to make this model. “All our European competitors use the same technologies only from different manufacturers. All we need to do is make a quality product and refresh it from time to time from the point of view of aesthetics and new features,” the executive said.

Yelena Zhuchenko, Head of the General Power Engineering Department at the Belarusian state power engineering research institute BelTEI, pointed out that a concept is in development to convert urban transport in the oblast capitals and Bobruisk to electric traction by 2025. There are plans to consider gradually expanding the use of electric buses and autonomous-motion trolleybuses.
