Belhydromet: frosts may cause damage to winter rapeseed in the north-eastern part of the country

08.01.2024

Frosts can cause damage to winter rapeseed in the north-eastern part of Belarus. BELTA was informed about this by the Republican Center for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Pollution Control and Environmental Monitoring of the Ministry of Natural Resources.
"Agrometeorological conditions for wintering crops have become more complicated. After the December thaw, it got colder in January and winter weather set in. Frosts observed in recent nights can cause damage to winter rapeseed in the north-eastern part of the republic, where, with insufficient snow cover, the air temperature dropped to minus 15 -20 degrees. Under the influence of low temperatures, the soil began to freeze,” Belhydromet noted.
According to the latest observational data, the snow cover height is 5-15 cm, in some places in the Gomel and north-west Vitebsk regions it has increased to 20 cm, in the extreme north-eastern regions of the country the snow height is less than 5 cm. In most of the territory of Belarus, the snow cover should protect winter crops from the expected increase in frost. However, according to agrometeorologists, due to its uneven occurrence in some places, primarily in the northern part of the country, where the lowest temperatures are expected, there may be a risk of damage to the least frost-resistant wintering crops.
