Eurasian Economic Union sets up working group on climate agenda
The prime ministers of the the Eurasian Economic Union member states ruled to set up a working group on the climate agenda, Iya Malkina, the official representative of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), told a press briefing following the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Cholpon Ata, Kyrgyzstan on 20 August, BelTA has learned.
This working group will be tasked with aligning the positions of the EAEU member states on the climate agenda. It will also be working to set up an EAEU climate data bank and digital initiatives, including those related to carbon footprint. These steps are needed in order to stimulate environmental activities in the EAEU member states and make enterprises more competitive.
According to Iya Malkina, in the future the climate agenda might be included in the competences of the EAEU, while the EEC might be vested with new appropriate powers. She also recalled that all EAEU member states ratified the Paris Climate Agreement and approved national plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
