Lukashenko outlines controversial points in draft new Constitution

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko outlined controversial points in the draft of the new Constitution as he reviewed preliminary results of the Constitutional Commission's work at its extended session on 28 September, BelTA has learned.

"I cannot but dwell on the controversial points. There are no transitional provisions that give answers to the questions as to how the government will act after the adoption of the Constitution, how the Belarusian People's Congress will be formed, how the Commissioner for Human Rights will work? The draft does not have a clause on decrees. In this case, what will happen to the decrees already issued? There is no mechanism for holding elections on a single voting day following the early dissolution of the Parliament," the Belarusian leader said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that he did not name all the issues, there are much more of them. "In short, we have something to discuss. We must approach carefully the proposals that, for one reason or another, have not made it to the draft Constitution. In addition, I am sure that more proposals will be submitted during the national discussion,” he said.

The president considers it right to involve legal experts in the work to fine-tune the draft Constitution. They will finalize the text in a short time taking into account the national discussion, eliminate legal contradictions, he said.
